古筝 ~ Guzheng
Guzheng (pronounced
goo-jong), also called gu zheng, gu-zheng, Chinese harp, or Chinese zither, is
a beautiful string instrument with pretty sound that has over 2000 year of
history. In different parts of Asia such as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, it is
called Koto, Kayagum, and the Dan Tranh respectively.
Some of the ancient
guzhengs had 11 strings that were made of silk. And the player used their
fingers to play. Today, most of the strings are made of steel and nylon.
Players usually use picks on one or both of their hands. Picks are made of
tortoise shells or plastics and are worn on all the fingers except the little
fingers. There are different playing styles include the Shan Dong style, He Nan
style, Chao Zhou style etc. and they are all very unique in their own aspects.
Today, many new compositions has emerged and sometimes this beautiful
instrument is also used in many experimental music.
